Camden Market before the crowds: when to go and where to walk

Go on a Tuesday to Thursday morning, be through the gate for 10:00, and you get Camden Market at a human pace.

Short answer: a weekday morning, from 10:00, Tuesday to Thursday if you can manage it. Entry is free. You pay only for what you buy. Today is Sunday, which is the busiest day of the week, so write it off and come back midweek.

When the stalls open

Camden Market’s own site lists the market as open Monday to Sunday, 10:00 to 19:00, bank holidays included. Its FAQ says most traders open 10:00 to 18:00, and that the market closes only on Christmas Day. Visit London gives 10:00 to 18:00 for Camden Lock. So the sensible version is: from 10:00, with most traders going until about 18:00 or 19:00.

Hours vary by business, and the market itself tells you to check individual shops, stalls, restaurants and bars. Some retail looks to start later, especially on Mondays, so a Tuesday to Thursday visit is the safer bet. North Yard restaurants are open every evening, according to the FAQ.

Food is a separate clock. The food halls at Hawley Wharf, on Chalk Farm Road, NW1 8AA, are listed as open 11:30 to 23:00 every day. Do not turn up at 10:00 expecting lunch.

The quietest times

  • Tuesday to Thursday, 10:00 to 12:00: the consistent verdict of the visitor guides, which describe a weekday morning as relaxed.
  • Saturday, 10:00 to 12:00: the second-best option, before the rush builds.
  • 13:00 to 16:00: the busiest stretch, according to one guide.
  • Sunday: the busiest day. One travel blogger says it feels as if the whole of London is there.

Stalls open at 10:00 but guides say it does not get properly busy until about midday. That gives you a two hour window of elbow room. Around 250,000 people a week visit, by one third-party estimate, so it pays to beat them.

The route round

Give it two to three hours, which is the estimate from one travel guide. Camden Market is three quarters: Camden Lock, the Stables and Hawley Wharf. This route takes them in an order that keeps you ahead of the crowd.

  • 10:00, Camden Town station. Visit London advises taking the right-hand exit, then turning right. It is about two minutes on foot to Camden Lock Place.
  • Camden Lock, Camden Lock Place, Chalk Farm Road, NW1 8AF. The market is based around three locks on the Regent’s Canal. Walk along the water while the stalls are setting up and the pavements are still passable.
  • The Stables. Camden Market’s journal describes it as a labyrinth of cultures and subcultures. It was once saddlers’ workshops, tack rooms and a horse hospital, and now has listed cobbled yards and umbrella alley. London Walks calls it the biggest surviving complex of Victorian industrial heritage buildings in London. Head up through the yards and the Horse Tunnel Market towards Chalk Farm Road.
  • 11:30, Hawley Wharf, Chalk Farm Road. Finish at the food halls, which open at 11:30. It opened in 2021, so it is the newest of the three quarters. Chalk Farm station is the way out, about five minutes from the Stables according to one guide.

Getting there without the crush

Camden Town is the nearest station, on the Northern line, and it is the busy one. One guide suggests using Mornington Crescent or Chalk Farm if you want to avoid the crowds. Kentish Town is about 11 minutes on foot from Camden Lock, which suits anyone who would rather walk it off. Check TfL for station status and step-free access before you travel, as lift access differs from station to station.

A few plain tips

  • Check the opening times of any particular stall or restaurant you have your heart set on before you go.
  • Eat after 11:30, not before. Food prices run at roughly £8 to £15 a dish, by one guide’s estimate.
  • Do the Lock first and the Stables second. By midday the Stables yards fill up quickly.
